Winters in the northeast region are long and freezing cold. During the cold winter weather Lake Erie could freeze completely. There is a snowstorm called the northeaster, this snowstorm can bring over a foot of snow at one time. There are also many snowstorms. Squirrels bury nuts to dig up in the cold weather. They do this because in the fall trees drop their leafs and the nuts. After this the nuts get covered with snow so the squirrels can't get them. Bears and many other mammals hibernate. These animals may sleep up to 100 days. Trees like maples and oaks drop their leafs. They do this so they don't need water.
